On Friday last the draw for the 2018 South Senior Hurling Championship took place. Carrick Swan begin the defence of their South Senior Championship crown on the weekend of April 1st against the team we defeated in last Septembers thrilling South Final, Killenaule. A goal in the closing stages of that game was the difference. It’s likely to be as close when the teams meet once again in just 10 weeks’ time.
At Friday’s South Board A.G.M. it was decided that the South Championship will be knock-out so if we lose our opener, we’re out. However, if we get over The Robins in the first round, we get a chance to re-ignite our age-old rivalry with St. Marys in the South Semi-Final. St. Mary’s won the South & County Intermediate Championships in impressive fashion in 2017, and will be a tough opponent for the either Swan or Killenaule. In the other semi-final, Ballingary take on Mullinahone. The Semi-Finals are provisionally penciled in for the weekend of April 22nd with the South Final provisionally set for the following weekend, April 28th.
The first round of the County Senior Hurling Championship will take place on the weekend of April 8th, which means, Swan could potentially play Senior championship on 4 of the 5 weekends in April.
The draw for the County Senior Hurling Championship takes place on Monday week, January 29th, beginning at 7pm, live on Tipp FM’s Extra Time show. We’ll compete in Roinn 1 once again in 2018. Roinn 1 contains the 16 top teams in Tipperary. Next Monday’s draw will pull 4 groups of 4 teams in Roinn 1. The format for the 2018 County Senior Hurling Championship can be viewed here.
We’ve also some exciting news to bring you in relation to the new field development this week. We have now begun the process of seeking tenders for the construction of a full size playing pitch and a training pitch at Ballyrichard Road. Contractors with the required expertise and who have completed pitch installations in the past will be contacted formally by letter inviting them to submit their tender application based on the bills of quantities and specification, health & safety plan and terms of contract as drawn up by our Agronomist James Healy. The completed tenders will be returned in sealed envelopes to the club by the deadline which is set at 5pm this coming Friday, January 26th.
After this date a meeting of club officers and the field committee will be convened to go through the completed written tenders. The Contractor whose tender is accepted will be required to enter into a formal contract with Carrick Swan Hurling/Football & Camogie Club.
