Late Matty Waters – Ballyrichard Court

All in the club are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Matty Waters who would have reached 81 years old next month.

Matty Waters was one of our great players at a time when the medal cupboards were running fairly bare but that should not detract from the fact of what a highly skilled player Matty was.

The name Waters is synonymous with Carrick Swan, Matty grew up watching his older brothers, Andy, Willis, John and Tommy all play with the club and while Willis, John and Tommy were winning back to back south senior hurling titles in 1958 and 1959, Matty was carving his own name into the pantheon of great players in the Swan club at underage level.

Matty won a south u21 hurling medal in 1962 when he played a starring role in midfield, he won a south junior hurling medal in 1965 and from then on until the early 1970s the Swan played in the Intermediate hurling championship. Matty’s performances during this period were always top class.

When Matty retired from giving his all to the club he became one of our most loyal supporters and no matter the opposition or who bore the favourites tag Matty would always back the Swan.

A little known fact is that Matty also became unofficial “advisor” to Michael and offered regular advice on how to keep the pitch at Pairc na nEalaí in pristine condition!!

A few years ago before illness took hold and when Matty was able he came across to Pairc na nEalaí with Michael for a look around and the pride he had in the place was very evident and as he looked at the old photographs in particular the raw emotion was there as he reminisced.

Matty is now reunited with all that have gone before him and the chat on hurling will last a long time.

Another link to older times is now gone from the club chain and these are always difficult times for all concerned, we particularly remember Matty’s family particularly Matty, Michael and Jackie and all the extended family and friends.

Matty Waters was a gentleman who will be missed by all who knew him.
Rest easy Matty.

Funeral Arrangements: Matty will repose in Walsh’s Funeral Home on Thursday from 5pm – 6.30pm arriving for mass in St Nicholas Church on Friday for requiem mass at 10.30am followed by burial in St Mary’s Cemetery.
